For the design of provincial transit roads at Zollikon and Zollikerberg near Zurich, DGJ won a competition where they proposed a Masterplan. Due to the scenic location on the northern shore of Lake Zurich, Zollikon is one of the best residential addresses in Switzerland and part of the so-called "Zurich Gold Coast". The former wine-estates around the old villages suddenly grew into a prestigious suburb with scattered settlements along the main roads in the 20th century.
These roads were not designed as urban space, like in the city of the 19th century, but optimized for fast traffic by engineers. The street profile only sporadically used as a public space and the community does not identify with outdoor spaces other than the lake or forests.
DGJ suggested precise tree plantings for individual streets to enhance their individual character. From our municipality-wide master plan several sub-projects have emerged, some of which have been realized. By now DGJ are a still consultant for variety of public infrastructure projects regarding the selection and placement of trees.
Also in larger public works or buildings for Zollikon (see also dgj075, dgj080) DGJ put great emphasis on the integration landscape. Excellent design of public spaces by roads, squares, buildings and plants is a viable strategy for sustainable identity for a local community.
